A formal application is required of all persons seeking admission to graduate study at Texas A&M University. The application consists of three sets of materials:

Official transcripts from each senior level post-secondary institution attended. (OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SENT TO GRADUATE ADMISSIONS - NOT TO THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT - IF SENT TO THE DEPARTMENT, THIS CAN CAUSE A DELAY IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS)

GRE scores, to be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to Texas A&M University (code 6003). Scores must be from a date within five years of the date of application.

Three letters of recommendation on letterhead. These must also include the signature of your letter-writer. PDFs are preferable. These letters can be submitted via the Applicant Information System (AIS) through the Howdy! portal and if you have done so you need not submit them directly to the department.

Statement of purpose (applicants to the Ph.D. program should include a discussion of what they propose to use as their required supplementary master's degree from another discipline, and how that degree would supplement their research and/or teaching interests within philosophy - for details on the supplementary master's requirement, see "Supporting Degree" under Ph.D. program requirements. The statement of purpose may be submitted via the Apply Texas website, but we will also accept statements of purpose sent directly to the Department.

If you are applying to the Ph.D. program, your statement of purpose should indicate what fields you are considering using as your supporting master's degree, and if you have already completed a master's degree which you wish to use for this purpose, you should explain how it complements your research and teaching interests within philosophy.
- If you are interested in being considered for both programs, complete a Texas Common Application to your primary program of interest, but include in an email or a cover letter that you wish to also be considered for the other program. Deadlines:

All prospective students seeking admission for the Fall semester must complete their applications by February 14. All prospective students seeking admission for the Spring semester must complete their applications by August 1. All applicants who complete their applications by those dates will be considered for graduate teaching assistantships. Applications for spring admission will be considered, but there usually are no teaching assistantships available starting then. Students wishing to be considered for university-wide Graduate Merit Fellowships, which begin in the fall, must complete their applications by January 1.
