students transferring in from other universities are admitted by the College of Liberal Arts, not by the Philosophy department. At a minimum, they must have a 3.0 GPA, have 24 transferable hours, and should designate Philosophy as their first choice of major.
students applying from high schools are admitted by the Admissions Office according to its own criteria. Please contact that office at (979) 845-3741.
students already at Texas A&M may switch majors to Philosophy if they have a 2.0 GPA, a 2.0 in any Philosophy courses they may have taken, and 95 hours or fewer. Please contact the Philosophy undergraduate advisors for an appointment.
The requirements for the philosophy minor are five courses in philosophy (15 hours), with at least three of the courses (9 hours) taken on the upper-division (300- or 400-) level. The remaining two courses can be taken either on the upper- division level or on the lower-division (100- or 200-) level. Your major advisor can sign you up for any minor.
Anyone who either is or wants to be an undergraduate Philosophy major at Texas A&M should contact the department's undergraduate advisors, Michael LeBuffe or Scott Austin, who can assist with curriculum planning, transfer credits, substitution credits, declaration of a minor, and other administrative chores.
