2008 Ancient Philosophy Workshop

The Department of Philosophy at Texas A&M University is pleased to announce that it will host the 31st Annual Workshop in Ancient Philosophy. The Workshop will begin on the evening of Thursday, April 3, 2008 and conclude the evening of Saturday, April 5.

Professor Marwan Rashed (École Normale Supérieure and CNRS) will give the keynote address, "Socrates in the Phaedo and Aristophanes", on the afternoon of Friday, April 5. Nine other workshop papers will be presented. For details of papers, authors, and commentators, see the conference program (link below).

The Ancient Philosophy Workshop has been an annual event since 1978. The Workshop was co-founded by Deborah Modrak, when she held an appointment at Rice University, and by Alexander Mourelatos of the University of Texas at Austin. After the initial two years, Professor Mourelatos and the Joint Classics-Phiosophy Graduate Program in Ancient Philosophy at UT Austin played a major role in the establishment of the series. The University of Texas at Austin has hosted over half of the Workshops in subsequent years.

The organizing committee for this year's Workshop is Cynthia Freeland (University of Houston), Donald Morrison (Rice University), Robin Smith (Texas A&M University), and Stephen White (the University of Texas at Austin).
