Financial Support

The Philosophy Department offers an average of eight to ten incoming students teaching asistantships each year. Students receiving assistantships are exempt from out-of-state tuition charges, and Texas A&M now pays full-time (9 credit hours) tuition for all teaching assistants (although teaching assistants still have to pay various fees, which add up to around $800 per semester). An inexpensive (about $20/month) health plan is available for single graduate students, although premiums for plans covering a spouse or dependents are significantly higher. In addition to the above benefits, new teaching assistants in our master's program last year received a nine-month salary of $10,500.00, and new teaching assistants in our PhD program received a nine month salary of $13,000.00. The salaries of graduate assistants are subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes, but there is no State income tax in Texas.

There are a few Fellowships awarded at the University level on a competitive basis. Candidates must be nominated by the Philosophy Department, and in order to be considered for these fellowships, applicants' materials must all be received by January 1.
