The Oceanario in Lisboa

The Oceanario (Portuguese for "aquarium") is located in the Expo '98 grounds, pictured as seen from our departing flight.

There is a huge central tank with a large population of "open ocean" fishes.

The central tank is surrounded by smaller enclosures featuring both fish and birds from various oceans, e.g. the arctic (represented here by a puffin).

There are also tropical fish.

Gary couldn't imagine why a sea urchin would care one way or another if it was in captivity.

But the sea otters probably didn't have as much space and as many things to do as a mammal should.

This remarkable species of seahorse is from the Indian ocean. We couldn't decide if there is anyone home in a seahorse's head.

We were especially fascinated by the flounder fishes, who made us think that if God created all the species, then clearly God was suffering from a hangover when he made the flounders.
