The Oceanario in Lisboa
| The Oceanario (Portuguese for "aquarium") is located in the Expo '98 grounds, pictured as seen from our departing flight.
There is a huge central tank with a large population of "open ocean" fishes.
The central tank is surrounded by smaller enclosures featuring both
fish and birds from various oceans, e.g. the arctic (represented here
by a puffin).
There are also tropical fish.
Gary couldn't imagine why a sea urchin would care one way or another
if it was in captivity.
But the sea otters probably didn't have as much space and as many things
to do as a mammal should.
This remarkable species of seahorse is from the Indian ocean.
We couldn't decide if there is anyone home in a seahorse's head.
We were especially fascinated by the flounder fishes, who made us
think that if God created all the species, then clearly God
was suffering from a hangover when he made the flounders.
